Gather Ideas Like Seeds
By Alan Willett, May 23, 2017
"It is only the farmer who faithfully plants seeds in the Spring, who reaps a harvest in the Autumn." — B.C. Forbes
I love finding dandelions on my walks. The flowers are great for feeding our bearded dragon. The ones gone to seed are great for blowing on and making wishes. And the seeds go everywhere and it seems that they grow everywhere!
The morning glory flowers are not so easy. One year I tried just scattering the seeds and none of them grew. The years where I prepare the soil, prepare the seeds, carefully plant the seeds and tend to watering and weeding, those years they do quite well.
The ideas we have in business are more like the morning glory than the dandelion. I have yet to see an idea of mine leave my head and grow on its own!
My key point today is not about the planting of the seeds, but the gathering of those seeds. I have found that the gathering of the ideas is a critical part of a business process. I encourage people to keep a log of their ideas. Keep a note book near! Have a place to keep those ideas. Be always gathering.
Periodically review the ideas. Join ideas together. Look at the ideas and see new seeds of ideas suddenly appear. Do not lock these seeds up because in our business world we always have the spring planting and the fall harvest simultaneously.
Gather the seeds. Care for them. Plant them well.
Enjoy the harvest!
Yours in the calm pursuit of excellence,
