Alan Willett did an excellent job delivering a high-value talk at our monthly CEO Wisdom Exchange. A CEO attendee told me that Alan’s presentation was one of the best as he had received some very valuable ideas that he was going to implement immediately.
Alan provided laser clarity on a challenging problem for us. His great questions, the structure, and his leadership of the engagement resulted in a strong consensus on how we should move forward.
Many consultants have helped our organization. Alan has had a more positive impact than anyone else.
Alan's book is timely, topical and extremely valuable. Alan's “out of the box” thinking is refreshing, challenging, wise and always useful. I highly recommend this book to leaders, potential leaders and the unleadable.
I used to think our competitive advantage was our technology. I was wrong. After months of working with him, I now know that my company's secret weapon is Alan Willett.
In the IT organizations I help, the root cause of most problems is a failure of leadership. I'll be handing out Alan's book to IT leaders as part of my work to help IT live up to its promise.
Whether you’re new to leadership ranks or a veteran, Alan Willett’s Unleadable will lead you through the quagmire of difficult issues in turbulent times. Alan gives you the courage and skills to lead in tough situations, with tough people, in a tough environment.
Leading the Unleadable is a great addition to Alan’s proven powerful contributions to the field of leadership.
For all who are grappling with leadership – either as a leader, as a leader of leaders, or perhaps as an aspiring leader, it has new insights to offer. Alan’s approach is direct, and his field research really buttresses the learnings.
Thought provoking and to the point. Alan Willett’s Leading the Unleadable transformed how I handle difficult situations.
Your difficult people are often extremely valuable when turned in the right direction. Read this. Better yet, understand the concepts in this book and use them.
In his book, Alan systematically deconstructs the challenges that all leaders face and lays out a playbook of pragmatic techniques and mindsets for transforming people problems into inspirational moments of leadership.
Every work setting has its share of mavericks, cynics, divas and other difficult people… The difference between success and failure is figuring out how to mold these challenging (and smart) people into one team with a common focus. I recommend this book!
This book is a must read for anyone aspiring to be an exceptional leader. Leading the Unleadable captures the heart and soul of leadership.
A great book. As I read Alan’s book, I was frequently so taken back by a concept that I thought, “That’s it!” These are great leadership concepts for managing large organizations or even for leading teams of one: yourself!
Alan provides unique guidance on how to handle the personality quirks that become big problems for the rest of the organization. He goes well beyond the reaction to how to prevent the problems from even emerging at first time.
Alan is a master chef and the chapters within his book are his recipes for success. Having tried his recipes I can say the final dish is a delight. Alan always has a guiding manner when it seems all is lost.
Alan’s knowledge of software development and ways to improve productivity and quality have helped me succeed in every role. His mentoring has provided a benchmark for how I approach difficult situations.
The breadth of topics we covered (such as leading people, project management and software architecture) and the depth to which we covered them (ranging from general theory, to active events) provided an immediate and lasting return on the investment.
Alan’s ability to immediately see the most important points of any discussion is amazing to see. He offers guidance that is so skilled and subtle that people end up doing the exact right thing because they “discover” it’s the best route.
Alan has demonstrated a finely-tuned ability to perceive what we really need to understand and execute on in order to improve. He has proven over and over again that he will listen deeply and collaborate for optimal success -- magic happens!
Alan is world class. He provided great value to the Gorges business immediately. He quickly understood our organization's needs and customized larger-scale techniques to just the right size for our company culture.
Our morale was suffering and overtime and heroics were the norm. With Alan’s consulting, we transformed into a highly productive, enjoyable organization where top talent lined up to join our team.
Alan is one of the best consultants in the world. He has coached me and mentored me long before the “Mentor Coaching” concept was around. Any organization who engages Alan is lucky to experience his magic.
Thank you Alan for the customized approach you took with my mentoring. I learned a lot and my confidence level has rocketed. I wish everyone could have a mentor like you!
Alan has been a wonderful mentor coach to me. He has always proactively guided me and given great advice in challenging situations that I have faced. He doesn’t just provide answers, but shows how to apply critical thinking to complex situations.
Alan's enthusiasm and inspiration is contagious. His constant optimism and true-life experiences were very refreshing. Alan’s leadership showed new avenues to explore, without losing hope in our fellow humans even when it’s not always smooth sailing.

Alan is one of the most talented individuals who I have every known. He is a great motivator, project manager, problem solver, and a truly wonderful person. If I ever do another start-up he is my first phone call.
Alan’s coaching armed a good team with the tools and perspective needed to deliver superior quality work on time. Alan doesn’t just coach a process, he coaches the people.
Alan is an incredible leader who moves people and teams to learn and improve the total work environment. Intelligent, chopping complexity into small bites in sophisticated ways, and always hopeful, Alan is the essence of a perfect consultant.
In my 25 years of running a business Alan is the best consultant I have hired at bringing together people and process. He has a way to bring people together to own the issues and make the changes that are necessary for improvement.
An SEI instructor called Alan “the best natural change agent I have ever met.” I agree with his statement. Alan has an organic, natural style that people respond to. His advice and guidance are often sought by many people, myself included.
I found this book to be a wonderful resource for all leaders, because it discusses strategies for improving leadership at all levels with a thorough discussion of leadership challenges and strategies for improvement.
I came to know Alan and his work quite well and have been particularly impressed with his ability to recognize the essence of complex issues, to define practical solutions, and to convince management and team members to implement these solutions.
Change is not easy but Alan can make it look like it is. Alan provided the trifecta of what we needed: breakthrough insights, relentless focus on VALUE, and the magic ability of getting buy-in with key stakeholders.
